Trail Adventures:

I embarked on a mostly circular hike, starting from the lodge. The journey began with a descent down the wooden staircase to the famed lookout point, where Starved Rock derives its historic name. This spot offers breathtaking views over the Illinois River and the expansive beauty of the park. My next stop was French Canyon, a stunning site that, due to low water levels, allowed for a unique hike right up the canyon. It was the perfect setting for capturing memorable photos.

Continuing along the river, I passed several lookout points and canyons. I stopped at the impressive Wildcat Canyon for another waterfall photo opportunity. The highlight of my hike was reaching La Salle Canyon. This is arguably the park’s crown jewel, with its large waterfall and serene pools. The return trip on the upper trail provided a different perspective, offering majestic views from atop Wildcat Canyon. The entire 6-mile journey took just over two and a half hours, including numerous stops to take in the sights and snap pictures.

Lodge Amenities:

After a day of hiking, the Starved Rock Lodge was a welcome retreat. It features a cozy indoor pool and jacuzzi—a perfect way to unwind. The Great Room, with its fireplace and restaurant, offers a spacious area to relax with family, delve into the area’s history through photos and artifacts. This was the perfect spot to share stories of the day’s adventures. The lodge’s bar presents a more intimate setting with an eclectic vibe and tasty food offerings. Despite visiting in winter and finding the outdoor areas too chilly for lounging, the warm and inviting indoor spaces were just the right antidote to the cold.

Exploring Utica:

The weekend trip allowed for a delightful detour to nearby Utica, where I stumbled upon a bustling wine tasting festival. The vibrant atmosphere, with streets filled with people enjoying local wines, shops, and eateries, was unexpected and added a festive layer to my visit. It’s worth noting that Utica hosts this event annually, making it a must-visit for future trips.

Nearby Attractions:

For those extending their stay, Matthiessen State Park is just a stone’s throw away. Less crowded yet equally stunning, this park is a less-known gem. Nearby Buffalo Rock State Park also offers lovely trails and unique attractions. Pebbles, Cocoa and baby Hope the resident bison, add variety to the outdoor experience.
