The Right Time for Change: The Art of Timing
Is this the right time for change? This question has echoed through my thoughts repeatedly over the past 18 months, each time emerging with greater urgency. Recently, whether through the subtle nudges of the universe, the consequences of my past decisions, or a mix of both, I’ve been pushed toward the brink of pivotal, life-altering decisions. Despite this, I confess I’m not the type to easily “pull the trigger” on major life choices. There’s always that lingering doubt—maybe now isn’t the right time for change.

As a result, I find myself falling into the all-too-familiar patterns of procrastination and making excuses, allowing the currents of daily routines to sweep me along. More often than not, this leads me to activities I dread, tasks that neither fulfill my needs nor ignite my passions. Consequently, I’m left wondering yet again: Is this really the right time for change?
Through my exploration, I’ve come to realize that such doubts are not unique to me alone. Many of us grapple with similar uncertainties when faced with the prospect of change. In the following sections, I’ll delve into some of the critical decisions I’ve made about my life and explore how I came to the affirmative realization that yes, now is indeed the right time for change.
Embracing Change: First Steps
Understanding the fear of change is crucial in comprehending why making life-altering decisions can be so daunting. Take, for example, my own experience in 2017 when I faced a significant life-changing event. At that time, I had settled into a beautiful apartment in Spain, surrounded by a new circle of friends, and was enjoying the benefits of working from home. Despite these comforts, a deep-seated feeling that I needed a change persisted—specifically, the idea of moving back to the US to be closer to my family after 24 years abroad.
Fears and Conformity
The fear of change is rooted in several psychological barriers that can immobilize us. First and foremost is the fear of failure. When I considered moving back, I wasn’t just worried about the logistics. I was also burdened by the possibility of failing to reintegrate into American society and the judgment that might follow.
Another significant barrier is the fear of regret. As I contemplated leaving Spain, thoughts like, “What if I make this change and it turns out to be the wrong decision?” loomed large. This fear of regret led me to overanalyze the situation, causing me to freeze and avoid making any decision.
The comfort of familiarity also plays a strong role in our resistance to change. Despite feeling an urge for a new beginning, the familiarity of my life in Spain—my apartment, my friends, and my established routines—made the idea of leaving extremely intimidating. Stepping out of this comfort zone meant facing new challenges and uncertainties back in the US, which was daunting.
However, understanding these fears is just the first step. By acknowledging them, as I did in my journey, we begin to see them not as insurmountable walls. More importantly we see them as hurdles that are manageable and worth overcoming.
The Role of Life’s Signals in Decision Making
The role of life’s signals in decision-making can often be subtle yet profoundly impactful. In my case, these signals were not just subtle nudges but rather clear signs pointing me towards a significant life change. My experience exemplifies how sometimes, the universe seems to step in when we are too hesitant to make pivotal decisions ourselves.
In May of 2023, as I was planning my summer trip to the US, I engaged in what I thought would be a routine phone call with my landlord in Spain. The conversation unexpectedly shifted when he mentioned his plans to reclaim the apartment for personal use by November. This revelation was particularly troubling. My initial plan had been to maintain my apartment in Spain while I was away for the summer, a strategy that would now be financially and logistically untenable.
I was faced with the reality that I would have to vacate the apartment upon my return. I realized that maintaining an empty apartment which I would ultimately need to relinquish was neither practical nor financially sensible. This moment of clarity came unexpectedly but it crystalized my decision-making process. I recognized that the universe, through the voice of my landlord, had effectively made the decision for me to move on.
Life’s Signals: Being Receptive
With no place in Spain to call home upon my return, I was suddenly unshackled from my previous commitments. I was now free to redefine where “home” could be. This scenario accentuated a critical aspect of life’s signals: they often come at unexpected moments and from unexpected sources. These signals were the clarity I needed to propel me forward.
Recognizing and interpreting these signals can be a powerful tool in decision-making. It requires a mix of intuition and rationality to discern whether these signs are merely coincidences or meaningful indicators guiding us toward necessary changes. In my journey, this unexpected conversation was a decisive factor. It not only prompted my return to the US but also taught me the value of being receptive to the signs life throws our way.

Reflections: Looking Back
Reflecting on the decision to move back to the US, it’s clear that the transition involved substantial emotional and mental adjustments. The process of settling back into life in the US has been ongoing. I can even admit that at times, not entirely smooth. However, I firmly believe that relocating was the correct choice for me at this time.
Once the decision was made, my mindset shifted dramatically towards preparing for the move. I engaged deeply with journaling. Journaling has always served as a therapeutic outlet where I could express my thoughts and emotions freely. This practice helped me to articulate and process the changes I was experiencing. Conversations with friends and family also played a crucial role. They offered not only emotional support but also helped reinforce the positive aspects of my decision. These discussions often highlighted the benefits of being closer to my family, which I had longed for during my time abroad.
No Wrong or Right Time for Change
Throughout this transition, I’ve made a conscious effort to remain attentive to my own needs and feelings. Acknowledging that this change, while right for me now, might not be permanent. I have adopted a flexible mindset towards the future. I am prepared to pivot and take a different path if the need arises, without harboring any feelings of regret or remorse. The perspective that there are no absolute “wrongs” or “rights” in life decisions, just learning experiences, has been incredibly liberating.
This mindset shifts the focus from fearing potential mistakes to viewing each step as a part of a larger journey of personal growth. If, in the end, I decide that moving back to the US wasn’t the optimal long-term decision, I won’t view it as a failure or an error. Instead, I will see it as a valuable chapter in my life from which I can learn and grow. This approach allows me to continue moving forward, adapting and evolving based on my experiences. It reinforces the belief that every decision we make contributes to our ongoing narrative. Thus enriching our understanding of ourselves and our place in the world.
The Right Time for Change is Now: Don’t wait for Perfection
In concluding, the journey through self-doubt, decision-making, and embracing change enhances a pivotal lesson. In waiting for the “perfect” moment to act, it often leads to missed opportunities and continued dissatisfaction. The right time for change, as I’ve learned through personal experience, is now. The elusive perfect moment simply doesn’t exist.
Reflecting on my own transition from Spain back to the US, each step reaffirmed that taking action, despite uncertainties, was far more rewarding than remaining stagnant in comfortable familiarity. The decision to move, became a testament to the power of seizing the moment. It was a clear signal from the universe that it was time to move forward. Thus challenging the notion that we must feel entirely ready before making significant life changes.
Embracing Change
This belief in action is rooted in the understanding that life is a series of calculated risks and adjustments. By journaling, discussing with loved ones, and reflecting on the potential benefits of change, I equipped myself with the mental and emotional tools needed to adapt. These steps allowed me to transition with a mindset focused on growth and possibility. Unlike the mindset which is focused on fear and hesitation.
Embracing change without waiting for perfect conditions has taught me an invaluable lesson. There really are no wrong or right decisions. There are just paths that lead to different experiences and opportunities for learning. If a decision doesn’t lead to the expected outcome, it isn’t a failure but a pivot point, offering new directions and insights.
Therefore, if you find yourself hesitating over a decision, wondering if it’s the right time for change, consider the following. The right time for change might just be the moment you decide to take that leap. Don’t wait for perfection. Instead, embrace the opportunities for growth and learning that change brings. Move forward with confidence that any direction is a step towards greater self-discovery and fulfillment.
